A low voltage (12v) transformer is required to run your garden lighting system. The transformer plugs in to a standard mains supply and reduces the power from 230v to 12v in order to run the lights system and prevent them from otherwise burning out immediately.
When designing your outdoor lighting system, it is best to not exceed over 80% of the transformer's maximum wattage rating. To determine which transformer you need, simply add up the wattage of the lights you have chosen and select the transformer which at 80% capacity could safely power your chosen system. For instance, if your chosen lights add up to 18 Watts, the correct transformer would be the 30W model which can handle 24W at 80%, whereas the 20W model handles up to 16W at 80%.
Check the table in the images which gives each transformers' capabilities at 80% capacity, along with some example lighting setups that the transformer can handle.
